South African President Faces Calls to Resign After Court Ruling

Johannesburg, South Africa: In an unexpected move, South Africa’s High Court on Friday, May 8, revived an impeachment process against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the 2020 theft of foreign currency hidden inside a sofa at his Phala Phala farmhouse.

The court ruled that the vote taken by South Africa’s National Assembly to block further impeachment proceedings was unconstitutional, invalid, and must be reconsidered. The judgment revives political pressure on Ramaphosa, whose ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), had previously used its parliamentary majority in 2022 to prevent the establishment of a full impeachment committee.
The controversy centers on questions surrounding the origin and handling of the cash discovered at the president’s farm. Critics have questioned how such a large amount of foreign currency was obtained, whether it was officially declared, and why it was allegedly hidden inside furniture rather than deposited in a bank.
The court ordered that the findings of an independent panel report be referred for possible impeachment proceedings. Opposition parties, including the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African Transformation Movement (ATM), welcomed the ruling. The EFF has renewed calls for Ramaphosa to resign immediately.
President Ramaphosa has consistently denied wrongdoing, maintaining that the money came from the legal sale of buffalo at his farm. His supporters argue that the matter has been politicized by opposition groups seeking to weaken the ANC ahead of future elections.
It remains unclear whether the revived impeachment effort will seriously threaten Ramaphosa’s presidency. However, the ANC has previously witnessed the resignation of former presidents Jacob Zuma and Thabo Mbeki amid political crises and allegations of misconduct.
The latest court decision is expected to intensify political debate in South Africa and place renewed scrutiny on Ramaphosa’s leadership as the country continues to grapple with corruption concerns and economic challenges.
